MY STORY

I'm Dr. Alex Bernadett, a primary care sports medicine physician at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center.

I grew up in Grass Valley, CA, enjoying the Northern California foothills and close proximity to Lake Tahoe. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA as a biology and economics double major. I went on to graduate from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 2016 and completed my family medicine residency training at the Swedish Family Medicine First Hill program in Seattle, WA in 2019. In August of 2020, I finished my training with a sports medicine fellowship through the UC San Diego/SDSM combined fellow position. Upon completion of my fellowship, I decided to continue at SDSM and couldn't be more excited to practice primary care sports medicine in such a wonderful clinic!

My position has allowed me to work with athletes of all ages and abilities, from weekend warriors to Olympic-level athletes (that's me on the far right of the photo with the USA Men's Water Polo team during training in Greece). I'm currently the Team Physician for the San Diego Growlers, our semi-professional Ultimate Frisbee Team, and one of the primary care physicians for the student athletes at San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!). I've provided medical care and education in Guatemala (3 weeks during medical school) and in Malawi (four weeks during residency). I'm grateful for these opportunities to work on amazing teams and with amazing people.

I'm board certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and have a Certification of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine from ABFM. My special interests include using musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnosis and office-based procedures, sideline and event coverage, and providing care in resource limited settings.

My first experience in San Diego was during the summer of 2009, when I lived with my older sister, now a UCSD grad, in the UC neighborhood. I spent my time working at the Ralph's La Jolla deli, learning to surf at La Jolla Shores, and going to Padres games at Petco Park (including Nick Hundley's 16th inning walk off home run against the Reds in May '09). In my spare time, I enjoy playing and watching sports, keeping up with Major League Baseball (official Padres fan since 2019), spending time with my wife, Kristin, our twp daughters, and honing my novice surfing skills near our home in Encinitas.

DR. BERNADETT AND SDSM

As a physician at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center, I focus on delivering the highest quality of patient care in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I understand that no two people or injuries are the same, which is why I spend time with patients to determine the optimal treatment and plan for each patient. At SDSM, we have all the resources our patients need, including X Ray, musculoskeletal ultrasound, exercise stress tests, labs services, and an incredible physical therapy team, to get folks back to doing what they love!

SDSM first opened its doors in 1980. Since then, the clinic has grown into a respected Primary Care Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy hub in San Diego.
